             Introduction             ::

Configuration Item (CI) Process

A primary task activity performed by the Asset & Configuration Administrator is the reconciliation of the create and data information for Configuration Items. This is an important activity to support
  • Providing required data for informed business decisions.
  • Governing computing equipment, configuration data, and processes to ensure data quality, compliance to security, legal and financial policies.

 

Important Note:  Per Security Policy 30.1 Asset Registration and Licensing, all computing devices purchased by Intel, or for use on any Intel network, must be registered and kept current in the Intel corporate system of record tool for asset management.

 

Key Terms:  Integrated Service Management Platform (ISMP)   {showhide title="See More ..." changetitle="Hide ..."}

Key Terms Description
Computing Management System (ISMP,CMDB) The single repository of information accessed across the Service Management processes as a key driver of consistency between the processes. The repository contains identified items each having a set of specified attributes. The relationship between identified items is captured in the database. This term and concept is common to ITIL.
Configuration Item (CI) Examples:  Laptops, Desktops, Servers, Network Gear, Telecom Gear, etc.
Cost Center The department cost center value associated with the asset.  Note: This is not intended to be the depreciation cost center for the asset. This is often the cost center associated with the user contact.
Manufacturing Reference Number (MRN) The manufacturer's reference number for the product. It may be a number used by the manufacturer or a number determined by Intel employees for internal use.
Number Unique number assigned by the system.
PO Line Number The purchase order line number used to purchase the item.
Purchase Order (PO) A commercial document issued by a buyer to a seller indicating types, quantities, and agreed prices for products or services the seller will provide to the buyer.
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) The unique identifier for the radio frequency identification tag attached to the equipment.
Serial Number A unique number assigned for identification which varies from its successor or predecessor by a fixed discrete integer value.
Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) A work breakdown structure is a tool used to define and group a project's discrete work elements (or tasks) in a way that helps organize and define the total work scope of the project.

            Administrator Role            ::

The Asset & Configuration Administrator is responsible for Configuration Item information regarding the create and data information integrity. Reconciling the accuracy of the create and data information is important. Process tasks include performing:
  • additions or updates to software and hardware data in the Integrated Service Management Platform (ISMP) that require Administrator permissions. This is done on behalf of all services.
  • SAP related tasks to make sure SAP is updated per changes in the ISMP.

 

General responsibilities:
  1. Add new Configuration Items (CIs) and contracts to the Configuration Management System and link them to purchasing information.
  2. Submit Asset Management Tool (AMT) requests or performs SAP direct updates within SLA targets.
  3. Research changes that need Administrator approval and execute respective updates.
  4. Add or edit reference data in the Configuration Management System, e.g. Product Information.
